چکیده
The blood samples were sent to the lab for further investigations. A comple te b lood count showed hemoconcentration, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia. Hb 15.1 gm/dl, total WBC count 1.93 x 109/L, (myelocyte 1%, metamyelocyte 4%, band forms 14%, segmented neutrophi ls 30% lymphocytes 47% and monocytes 4%.) and platelet count 102 x 109/L. Peripheral blood smear demonstrated leucopenia with shif t to lef t in granulocytes peripheral blood smear is unusual and should be regarded as a useful indicator of overwhelming infection, supporting an early and definitive diagnosis of septicemia. Although several species of bacteria have been described on the examination of peripheral blood smears, detection of bacteremia due to Gram negative rods on a film has been rarely reported.1

A 78-year-old woman hospitalized for investigation of ascites presented with weakness, loss of appetite, fever, and chills. A complete blood count showed anemia, leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia (hemoglobin, 8.5 g/dL; leukocytes, 27.5 3 10/L; platelets, 50 3 10/L). Peripheral blood smear demonstrated the presence of neutrophilia with left shift (promyelocytes, 0.3 3 10/L; myelocytes, 1.9 3 10...

A 65-year-old man was brought to the ER for altered mental status for 12 hours. At ER, the patient was lethargic with hyperthermia. The laboratory studies revealed intravascular hemolysis with anemia, hyperkalemia, and elevated LDH. The abdominal CT showed liver abscess with marked aerobilia. Respiratory condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating intubation. A massive amount of blood exuded ...

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a leading cause of both community-acquired and nosocomial gram-negative bacterial pneumonia. A significant clinical complication of Klebsiella pulmonary infections is peripheral blood dissemination, resulting in a systemic infection concurrent with the localized pulmonary infection. We report here on the critical importance of 2-microglobulin expression during murine K....

Buffy coat smears from febrile patients may contain visible bacteria and therefore detect bacteraemia before conventional blood cultures become positive. However, it is unusual to see micro-organisms in an otherwise untreated peripheral blood smear. The case of a febrile neutropenic patient is reported. A Wright's stained peripheral blood smear contained bacterial elements, thus making earlier ...
